It is a great historical fiction novel and a great addition to the study of financial literacy skills. If a parent had not recommended this book to me, I would never have found it. The book gives an opportunity to discuss bullying and different choices for handling a bully. The main character learns to face bullies at her school and in her neighborhood. One of the themes in The Bread Winner is facing challenges. After gathering background information about the Depression, students identify events in each chapter of The Bread Winner that are most likely to be historically accurate.
